6 | www.pmiradios.com Finding the right solution Motorola Solutions (MSI) has nearly 100 years in safety and security. In a world where communication technology is always evolving, one thing remains constant: There is no substitute for voice. MSI’s business and commercial two-way radio systems ensure your staff is always connected with easy-to-use, lightweight two-way radios. Designed to enable quick, discreet and efficient communication for businesses of all sizes. MSI’s MOTOTRBO™ professional two-way radios are operations-critical radio products, designed for professional and commercial communications. The comprehensive MOTOTRBO radio portfolio includes rugged portables, sophisticated mobiles and robust, versatile infrastructure. First time two-way radio communication buyers are often unsure what type of radios they should purchase. They want to know what the differences are between VHF, UHF, 900 MHz, Wi-Fi and LTE radios and the benefits of digital radios over analog. We hope the information below helps your decision-making process. Finding the right solution VHF, UHF, 900 MHz, Wi-Fi and LTE VHF, UHF, 900 MHz, Wi-Fi and LTE refer to the frequency bands and networks Motorola Solutions radios operate on. Each frequency band and network has its strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right frequency band or network is a crucial decision, and it can make or break the effectiveness of your communication system. Our experienced factory-trained experts are ready to help you find your solution! VHF, UHF, 900 MHz Use of the radio frequency bands in the United States is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Certain frequencies within each band have been designated for use by radios as well as by other services. In the United States, the frequencies used for these systems may be grouped into four general bands or ranges: low-band VHF (49-108 MHz), high-band VHF (169-216 MHz), low-band UHF (450-806 MHz), and highband UHF (900-952 MHz). VHF represents “Very High Frequency” while UHF represents “Ultra High Frequency.” Very High Frequency (VHF) The most common VHF frequency range for Land-Mobile Radio (LMR) systems spans 138-174 MHz. The most prominent feature VHF offers is its exceptional wide area coverage. VHF signals are known for traveling long distances, making them an excellent choice for outdoor applications that require wide-ranging coverage. There are analog and digital VHF two-way radios, with some being capable of doing both. If you’ve never used two-way radios, choose digital because they provide far superior audio quality, better signal range and functionality and longer battery life. Two-way radios for use outdoors Two-way radio communications in this category in the VHF frequency range offer the best coverage outdoors. Even though VHF two-way radios work indoors, and UHF two-way radios work outdoors, VHF signals offer better coverage in wide open spaces than UHF radios. If your daily coverage needs are primarily outdoors, VHF radios are the way to go unless you need a Push to-Talk Over Cellular (PoC) solution that provides nationwide coverage over an LTE network. Industries that typically use VHF two-way radios include agriculture, construction (highway), education (school buses) and transportation. Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) The most common UHF frequency range for LandMobile Radio (LMR) systems spans 450-470 MHz. UHF frequencies are known for their remarkable performance inside buildings, making them an excellent choice for businesses that operate primarily within structures like warehouses and office complexes. UHF two-way radios are the most used today. UHF is an all-around better signal when using radios indoors, like buildings or around cities. There are analog and digital UHF two-way radios with some being capable of doing both. If you’ve never used two-way radios, choose digital because they provide far superior audio quality, better signal range and functionality, and longer battery life. Two-way radios for use indoors The best two-way radios for indoor users are UHF, 900 MHz and or Push to-Talk Over Cellular (PoC). These two-

7 | www.pmiradios.com Finding the right solution way radios and devices all use frequencies that do well penetrating concrete and other obstructions. Industries that typically use UHF two-way radios include education, construction, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, property management, retail, private security, and transportation. 900 MHz The 900 MHz band, for Land-Mobile Radio (LMR) systems, spans 896-901/935-940 MHz. The advantages of utilizing the 900 MHz band for specific applications are numerous. The 900 MHz band is highly regarded for its reliability and effectiveness in ensuring uninterrupted communication for various industries. Its efficiency and dedicated use for two-way voice communication make it a preferred choice for businesses that require secure and instant communication. Industries that typically use 900 MHz two-way radios include education, hospitality, property management, restaurants, and retail. Wi-Fi Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide wireless high-speed internet access. Motorola Solutions’ WAVE PTX and Cure Ecosystem use your wireless internet connection (h 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi) to get your communications online and take your radio fleet to the next level. Industries that typically use Wi-Fi devices and web-based dispatching include construction, education, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, private security, retail, and transportation and logistics. LTE LTE, or Long-Term Evolution, is a 4G wireless broadband standard that provides high-speed data transfer and network capacity for mobile devices and other cellular devices. Push-to-Talk Over Cellular (PoC) is a relatively new category of two-way radio or push-to-talk (PTT) subscription on LTE networks that do not use traditional two-way radio frequencies (VHF, UHF, or 900 MHz). The advantages are better audio and the ability to communicate over larger areas without investing in additional equipment. WAVE PTX™ is a push-to-talk (PTT) subscription service app from Motorola Solutions that instantly connects your team across different devices, networks, and locations. It eliminates the barriers between devices, networks, and locations to let everyone be part of the conversation. Industries that typically use LTE devices and two-way radios include construction, education, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, private security, retail, and transportation and logistics.

8 | www.pmiradios.com Finding the right solution Why digital over analog? The reasons are soaring. Better signal range and functionality Increase communication with digital signals that ensures wider radio coverage across your entire course and facility. Improved audio quality Leverage the clarity of a digital signal that is far superior to analog. Motorola Solutions’ digital radios, such as MOTOTRBO™, provides superior audio and clearer voice communications with noise suppression that rejects static and filters out background noise. Longer battery life Digital radio technology allows for some radios to last approximately 35% longer on a single charge than a comparable analog radio. That allows your team to stay connected longer during everyday operation and events that require extended shifts. Greater spectrum efficiency Get two talk paths for each individual frequency, so you can use one repeater, not two— saving money on your infrastructure expense. Adaptable versatility Migrate to a digital two-way radio platform at your own pace with the ability to operate in both analog and digital modes, ensuring your new radios work along with your existing analog radios. Direct mode/Single site conventional Every MOTOTRBO radio is capable of direct radio-toradio communication without repeaters or radio systems and used with single site conventional systems. A conventional system is a step up from basic radio-toradio communications, where radios communicate via a high-power repeater, giving better coverage and more centralized control. Motorola Solutions’ on-site business and commercial radios are designed for direct mode or single-site conventional systems. Wi-Fi connectivity Wi-Fi connectivity can provide radio managers with the opportunity to remotely program radios faster than Digital Mobile radios (DMR), without taking them out of the field. Wi-Fi connectivity is available for programming and for Push-to-Talk (PTT) over Wi-Fi via Curve and WAVE PTX. PTT through WAVE PTX allows for dead spot mitigation for places where MOTOTRBO systems were not designed to reach. Interoperability While all DMR radios are designed to a standard that enables interoperability between different brands — both systems and devices — MOTOTRBO radios have the ability to work in conjunction with a number of different devices over broadband data networks thanks to WAVE PTX. Motorola Solutions’ WAVE PTX application provides the ability for smartphones, tablets and other devices to connect with MOTOTRBO over LTE and Wi-Fi. Migrate at your own pace Keeping operations running smoothly during a change in communication systems is vital to any business. It’s easy to migrate to digital with Motorola Solutions’ On-Site Business and Commercial Series digital radios because they deliver the same features as their analog radios as well as adding an upgrade path to digital. Digital models can operate in analog and digital modes concurrently — and to ease the transition even further, the dynamic mixed mode repeater functionality streamlines automatic switching between analog and digital calls. So, you can start using Motorola Solutions’ digital radios and repeaters on your existing analog system, then migrate to digital when your business is ready.
